What is a DMX universe and when do I need more than one?

Lighting Control and DMX

A DMX universe is a single run of 512 channels. For smaller events with a handful of fixtures, one universe is plenty. But when your rig grows, fixtures that use 30-50 channels each eat through 512 channels quickly. A rig of 20 moving lights at 40 channels each would need 800 channels, exceeding a single universe.

When this happens, you add additional universes. Professional lighting consoles can manage multiple universes. For larger installations, protocols like Art-Net and sACN send DMX data over Ethernet networks, which makes it easy to distribute dozens or even hundreds of universes across a venue without running individual DMX cables to every fixture.
