What is pipe and drape and how does it relate to rigging?

Lifts, Pipe & Other Rigging Equipment

Pipe and drape are a system of vertical uprights (pipes on adjustable bases) connected by horizontal crossbars from which fabric panels (drapes) are hung. It's used to create backdrops, divide spaces, mask backstage areas, and define room boundaries at corporate events, trade shows, galas, and weddings.

Pipe and drape are a ground-supported system, so it doesn't require overhead rigging points. It falls under the rigging category because it involves structural hardware that supports suspended fabric, and it needs to be assembled safely to prevent tipping or collapse. For taller runs or heavier fabrics, base plate weighting and proper bracing become important safety considerations.
