What is the difference between front light, back light, and side light?

Event Lighting Basics

These terms describe the direction from which light hits the subject relative to the audience. Front light illuminates the subject from the audience's perspective, providing visibility and ensuring faces are lit. Back light hits the subject from behind, creating a rim of light around the edges of the body that separates the performer from the background and adds depth. Side light hits from the sides, sculpting the subject with shadow and dimension.

A well-designed lighting plot uses all three angles (plus top light and fill light) to create a three-dimensional, visually interesting image on stage. Front light alone produces a flat, shadowless look. Adding back and side light transforms the visual from "lit" to "designed." This is true for concerts, corporate keynotes, theatre, and broadcast alike.
