What is the difference between oil-based and water-based fog/haze fluid?

Oil-based fluid lingers in the air longer and produces a slightly denser, more persistent atmosphere. The downside is that oil-based output can leave a light residue on surfaces and equipment, and it's more likely to trigger fire and smoke alarms.

Water-based fluid dissipates faster and doesn't leave as much residue, making it a better choice when sensitive equipment, hanging fixtures, or fire suppression systems are present. Water-based fluid is also generally preferred in venues with strict environmental or safety requirements.
